They may not be, it might simply be an optical illusion.

If string theory is true then everything is made up of little strings so circles and spheres are really just multisided polygons and when you get close enough the smooth edge vanishes and you see it's s straight line to another line on an angle.

It is just a name that is given for a round joined curved line.We have got used to calling it a circle. It is an important shape, that is found in wheels, circular clocks, round tables, etc.
