Probably some sort of standing wave in the atmosphere, similar to like a rosby wave or a jet stream type thing that we see on earth. Only on Saturn, cos of it's large size it's not affected by the frictional forces of land and exists quite happily for ages. In the same way the red spot on Jupiter is a massive storm that has been raging for all the time it's been observed.

None of the earth would be as we know it. The Equator runs East to West. It would change to North to South. The Earth is larger at the Equator in miles. With this change land masses would separate, half of the Earth would be dark. It is said that we had a pole shift once before, that tropical plant fossils had been found at the North and South poles.

An asteroid, a planetoid, an optical illusion, The Sentinile that puts you through a worm hole to a distant land, which means Arthur Clarke and Stanley Kubrick got it wrong!

AND, Clarke wanted it to be Saturn! Isn't that a hoot!

He might have got it right, except for the shape!

I'm with Rickolish in thinking it's some kind of standing wave phenomenon. Similar patterns have been observed in rotating fluids in the lab, though I don't think anyone has worked out a theory to explain it yet.

It is a huge storm system. I know from what I have read they say that it is similar to Earth's polar vortex, which has winds blowing in a circular pattern around the polar region.

It's a weather pattern that's not quite understood. When it's figured out, someone will write a paper about it but of course by then the media will forget about it.
