Respect should be mutual, but respect should be earned. Older people should be respected because they have had a lot more experience than young people. I can remember when I was young, thinking that I knew more than old people. Well, let me tell you, when you are young, you don't realize your ignorance. Old people have been both young and old. Young people know what it is to be young, but they have not had all the experience that come with living for a long time.

Old people should treat young people with respect, but young people should make an effort to earn the respect of old people. If you show respect for them, they will return it. Remember, some day you will be old. Then, what I am saying to you wil all make sense.

they believe that because they have been around alot longer that they knowwhat they are talking about and that you should listen even if you dont agree. i believe that respect is a two way street and i have said as much to my mom and my kids. if my mom is not willing to listen to what i think or believe then i tell her that the conversation is over and leave. i do the same with my know it all kids. most of the time if you tell them that you value what they say but you would like to tell them your oppinion then they will listen to and extent. just remember a lot of it is how they were raised and dont come down too hard or hateful because of what they think

respect is based on trust and earning the respect of another person, elderly people in genreal weather they were titans of business or skid row have something to offer the next genration. that is sage advice, they can share and prevent the mistakes they have made onto you, seek tolerance in yourself and you may find something amazing.
I know they smell funny, and crash cars ,and steal all the splenda and ketchup from the fast food places, but they are wonderful people to get to know.

They feel they were here longer and have more knowledge than a lot of us so they get should get special treatment. I just try to bite my tongue and smile when they do get disrespectful because I know they haven't got much longer.

I respect their age and will open doors, let them have my chair, etc.

I don't respect anyone that is rude, racist, gossip, etc., no matter what their age.
