The Valens Aqueduct is one of the most beautiful and symmetrical creations from the early Byzantine period that is to be found in Istanbul. It is really gorgeous. Unfortunately, heavy street traffic, smog, and just the rigors of the modern world are taking a toll on this 1600 year old beauty.

I certainly hope that the Aqueduct can be cared for, shored up so that it is stable and will not collapse, and will be returned to a use that would make it viable. A couple choices for how it could be made useful include returning it to it's original purpose, carrying water, perhaps with a beauty of a fountain at the end of its course, or else, making it into a footpath that is strong enough and safe enough to allow people to walk across it. The view from on top would be wonderful.

Don't try to reconstruct it for heaven's sake. Look at what a mess you made of rebuilding the walls of Theodosius. I recognise something had to be done to stop them crumbling away, but the rebuilding effort has made them look like a Disneyland castle in the last stages of AIDS. The earthquake of 1999 destroyed a section of the new stuff but left the old construction intact.
