Johnny Depp, in one of his more manic moods, definitely a good choice. Jim Carrey could pull it off, with a little discipline...

Lee Van Cleef I see more as a possibility as the leader of the samurai (Takashi Shimura's part)---It'd be a kick to see him play a heroic part, wouldn't it?
