Use vinegar and water and blot it in, and allow to stand.
Baking soda sprinkled on will remove the odor also

First I would rent a carpet cleaning machine. Instead of using the chemicals they sell. Get some oxyclean. Mix it double strength. Using hot hot water. Use the machine with the oxyclean and do the area at least twice. This should take all the traces of vomit out of the carpet and the smell should be good. If not There is an enzyme product you can usually purchase at the vaccuum cleaner store called 'Alive". A quart will cost between $5.00 and $7.00. Spray it on put plastic over and let it sit. Alive is the same chemicals that the wastewater treatment plants use to eat the nasty stuff when they are "recycling" wastewater. The smell is clean and pleasant. I have owned a cleaning service for over 25 years and have used both techniques to rmove bad smells. Alive will even elminiate urine smells and stains from your carpets. Good luck - let us know if it works~~-k-

If you can still smell it, it's still there.
I would use an extraction machine. Sometimes they call these steam cleaners. Something that sprays water or chemicals into the carpet and then sucks it out with a vacuum. You can rent them at most grocery stores.
If you have a wet/dry shop vac you can use that too. I've had very good success using a shop vac and a solution of Automatic Dishwasher Detergent and hot water. Dump it on, scrub it a little and suck it out. Dump some hot water on it and suck that out a couple times to rinse it. Let it air dry or you can use a fan on it to speed up the process. When it's dry, vacuum.

Resolve is wonderful to get almost anything out of a carpet. If you still have some smell after a good dose of Resolve, try a healthy spritzing of Fabreeze

Ya, what kbama2002 said. That should work. I was going to suggest a carpet cleaner like that myself.

Well, my aunt uses ammonia in water for cleaning carpets. You can get it in regular or lemon scented. It doesn't smell strong as long as you dilute it!
