i have 2001 jaguar s type if the heater is on off ,the temp gage will go to normal then in a littel while to hot.then if i turn heater on it will go back to normal.if i start with heat on its ok.whats wrong?

It could be your electric fan is not cycling correctly or your fan clutch could be going out. I would take it to a mech and get it checked out ASAP

It could be your thermostat or your electric cooling fan on the radiator. I doubt it if it's too serious right now, but if the engine keeps running hot you can cause yourself some problems. Best to get it fixed sooner than later. It could cost a lot more.

One of two things is broken - the thermostat itself, or the gauge that monitors the thermostat.

The thermostat should be relatively cheap to replace (though on a jag I never know). The gauge probably isn't awful either. My guess, though, is the thermostat is sticking.

At best, a thermostat that's defective.

At worst, engine wearing down.
