It happens very often , the light passed the earth closet enough that it passes through our atmosphere stripping of all but the RED light.

It is because there was a lunar eclipse. This is when the moon slips behind the shadow of the earth on the earths dark side.

The earth cast a shadow, but some of the light that goes through the atmosphere at the edge of the earths disk (relative to the moon and the sun) has most of the colours but the red light and is then refracted (or bent) and lights up the mood. The red light then shines back onto the earth and we see a red moon. Simple really.

It wasn't a lunar eclipse. The next one will be on August 28th. The most likely explanation is a comet or Venus/Mercury briefly passing between the plane of The Sun and The Moon.

I travelled from north london to south london last night around 8.30pm - The moon in north london looked really orange but by the time I got home it looked yellow again.

Yeah, I saw it around ten. It looked really lovely. Was it actually a lunar eclipse? We had one really recently, is it possible to have another one so quikly? My dad seems to think it was because of the sunset being so red and reflecting onto the moon but somehow I don't think so.

Yes we where travelling in the car and my son said he thought the moon was beautiful (he's 8) and wanted to know why it was red! I thought it was to do with the sunny day we had just had???
