"Yesterday" is not an adjective, and therefore cannot be used in conjuction with a noun. "Last," however, is an adjective.

I spoke to her last night is better because since you are talking to someone else in the future it is assumed you meant yesterday and it was last because it was so far the last night you have had.

It is very peculiar. Generally, we say 'yesterday morning' and 'yesterday afternoon', but 'last night'.
