Male betta 5 gallon tank. Very active, flaring, bubble nests, eating regularly. Was changing his water today when I took him out of the tank and placed him in a spare container. I placed a lid on top of the container but left a lil space for air to move in. He jumped out from that place while i was cleaning the tank decorations. I didn't realize it, I didn't hear any noise. It just struck me that I should check on him and when I did he was lying on the floor move slightly. I immediately picked him up and put him back in the container. I put the water in the tank (which i had kept to stand overnight) and started the oxygen pump and added the de chlorinator.I put him in the tank and started the light for some warmth.Heis moving I can see he is breathing but not swimming. His tail fin has torn in some places and he is missing one of the fins which lie on the either sides of his face. He had come up for air just once and swam vigourously.PLEASE PLEASE help me!!!!!

When I picked him he was wiggling.
I live in India where there are not many medicines available for pet fish. PLEASE tell me whatever I can do to save his life.

Ok he has both fins which lie on either side of his face. He cannot seem to use one of them all the time, but he just used 2 of them together when he came up for air.

He sounds like he may be in shock. Keep voices low, and the room he is in very quiet. Might be a good idea to turn the light off and keep the room in darkness for a bit, this usually helps animals in shock. Theres not much else you can do apart from keep your fingers crossed, and if he does recover, when cleaning him out cover the container hes in with a fine mesh wire, to let air in (but not let fish out!) Good luck...let us know what happens please.

I had this happen to me once before. He is probably in shock from his ordeal. If you can spare it leave his tank dimly lit for a little while to reduce some of his stress and if you can find it, treat him with some Melafix. This will help him grow back his tail fin and help him battle any infections that might get into his open wounds. Also in cases like this try to have some Aquarium salt on hand. For a betta in a 5 gallon tank about a tablespoon to a tablespoon and a half would do good for him. This helps combat disease and reduces stress. If you can't find these things in a store, perhaps you may find them online. Like everyone else has said it will be the waiting game. I have expected many of my bettas to die due to some mishap on my part and they pull through it. They can be tough little buggers when they want to be.

Betta fish can survive out of water for up to 4 days at least. They breathe air directly using a labyrinth system, and not from the water at all.

Betta are a very hardy fish. They have been found in mud puddles throughout Viet Nam and areas.

I would give him time, and a decent surfacing area. Keep his water pristine and he'll be fine. Here's a link to some betta care sites

I would say it's just a waiting game. He may have been fatally wounded...or he may be fine. Either way, there isn't a lot you can do.

However, make sure you NEVER change all of your fish's tank water!! It kills all the beneficial bacteria you have in the tank. Just perform regular water changes. The shock your fish feels every time you change the water could kill him. You've been lucky so far it seems, but make sure you leave some water and just clean the gravel well with a vacuum. Good luck with your fish--I hope he pulls through!

There's not much you can do for him at this point that you haven't done already. You handled it as well as possible and now he just needs time to completely recover. Everything you have said sounds like he should make a full recovery within a day or two, just give him a very quite peaceful place to rest and he should be just fine.
