i also wanted to add to that last one is, i know i can't use some of the things like the fake plants and the fish net. if anybody thinks none of these tanks are good, feel free to show me some but they have to be from petco or petsmart. thanks!

Please go with the 40gal tank. Turtles need a lot of room or they will get fat... My turtle was fat when I got him because he was a 5year old RES in a 20gal tank! Now he's going into a pond in summer ^.^

The 40gal tank will last a while, if you get a baby. If you are buying a turt from pet co, dont! Get one from a breeder in your area or someone who doesn't want theirs anymore. Petco is a bad place to buy your pets from. The only thing I've ever bought from them is fish, and just this year I was forced to buy a male russian tort because no one else had them anywhere.

Go with the 40gal, and remember you need to get UV lighting. It cheaper online, expecially at lllreptile.com

If you need help, just ask. I have two turtles of my own and tons of reptile experiance. ^.^

I assume you are talking about a young Red-ear Slider?

Forget most of the package deals- you are wasting some of your money.

For a nice set-up, try this:
- An attractive 40 gallon (or so) tank
- A light hood with a UVB-rated light and timer
- A small 'basking bulb' and clamp light that lets you point it at the basking site (also plugged into a timer). Keep the basking area about 90F.
- A good filter. Check out this article for ideas: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/waterquality.htm The filter is a BIG part of a good set-up so be prepared to spend a bit on it!
- Water heater that can safely keep things 75-80F
- Good dock, ramp, log, or other basking site(s)
- Some thermometers will help monitor conditions

Now- to make things nicer for you...
- Pea-sized river gravel
- Natural plants (the growing turtle may eat them- and this is actually good news!) and the appropriate planting media
- Aquarium vac-type cleaner to clean the gravel and change about 1/4th of the water weekly.

What you DO NOT need:
- Water conditioner, unless your water is rather yucky (letting it sit for 24 hours open is a good idea, but otherwise if you can drink it, it will be OK.)
- Calcium or conditioning blocks
- Bubblers or aereators, unless you want them for decoration

About the only other thing you'll need is a good supply of food. Here is a good article about THAT: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/care.htm

THANK YOU for doing homework before you buy!
