Ignorant people amuse me :D
They've found what appears to be cracks on the surface of mars that are aligned with the same type of cracks you would only get from running or moving water. As people have discussed, they've also found caves that go down quite a ways. Why is this big? Well, simply enough it's what science does. Science tests idea's that are already put into place and recreates them until a sturdy one is achieved. To think that finding life outside of planet earth isn't big is to be terribly naive. Sure, you can find organisms in extreme environments, but thats still ON EARTH. Finding another planet capable of supporting life opens the door for a world of theories and experiments, if there's life on mars who's to say there isn't another planet similar to ours who's organisms have developed to actually be "intelligent".
This could also help prove right or wrong the theories of how the earth came about. If it's possible for organisms that started as bacteria and unicellular things to grow into intelligent creatures on other planets we could say the Theory of humans through evolution is plausible.
It's important because it's science.

They need something to justify the absurd budget that we are paying for by claiming the discovery of "life" would be some huge scientific discovery. That notion is absurd. There are thousands of microbial "beings" that are "alive" here on Earth in conditions that supposedly no "life" could survive in. (extreme heat and cold, etc.) Are they living organisms? Technically yes. Are they scientifically significant proof of life that could lead to multi celled "intelligent" life? Very highly doubtful. So they make a big deal out of it like it would be some big shock that our measily little planet isnt the only place that microbials can be found alive on. To think, out of all of deep space and the vast universe... we might not be the only planet that has life of some sort. Gee, there's a shock.

The ultimate thing for us to find in space is life. Basically, that's why we're there. If we found another life form or even a civilization, that would be the greatest scientifically discovery. That's why every discovery that sounds like it might lead to a discovery of life is exciting.
This particular story.. well.. is not much in my opinion.. Caves can occur naturally. I don't know why this story is so exciting.

It's wishfull thinking on the part of Scientists.
Once upon a time, you know, SCIENTISTS saw CANAL on MARS and DARK ARES they though was vegitation and changed with the seasons.
Then we went there and found out it looked like the Moon and there were no canals and no moss was growing on the north side of rocks.

Ask the news media. They have nothing better to write about. There is no reason to believe it will be found. All they did was locate what might be caves.

I know UFOs often dig tunnels.
So it looks like we finally rooted them out, there is no other explanation.
I hope they don't attack.
An answer like this has to be worth 10 points.
