Hi Katie,

Have you considered going on the pill? This can make your blood flow lighter and usually make the period shorter. I found that making sure I ate iron helped (although I don't know how scientific this is.) Ultimately, everybody is different and this may just be your bodies natural way of having periods. If its really bad go to a doctor. They have solutions other than the pill. You can always use hot water bottles or the little stick on pads to control cramps and try taking vitamins etc. If they're that bad then you really need medical advice.

A healthy diet and your period are related. The number of days you bleed, how much you cramp, and your mood swings can directly correlate to your diet. A diet high in fruits and vegetables, low in fat and sugar can improve the length of your period and can also make it lighter. You would need to try this diet for at least 3 months before you would see much improvement though. For me, it wasn't right, and so although I aim for a healthily diet, and it's healthier, but it's not quite as it should be, and I know when I've been bad as my periods are longer and heavier and often more painful.

As others have said, there is also the pill, but if you didn't want to take that, but wanted to explore the medicinal route, then alternatively you can get Mefenamic acid, or Norethisterone on prescription, they both have proven results in studies on women who have painful or heavy periods. Norethisterone isn't a contraceptive, but can have some contraceptive effects, although they are not reliable.

So there you go, hope it helps, I wish you lots of luck.

Not really things you can eat but if you want it to stop sooner try birth control. It will usually stabalize your period after a couple of months and you will have a 7 day period. If you want to make it shorter than that there is a birth control available that will only give you 4 periods a year but there are also increased side effects. Talk to your doctor and see what he tells you is best. :)

Hi there,
No, there is nothing you can eat which will help in this case.
However, a prescription only medication called Primolut N tablets (which is used in many contraceptive pills) can be taken one tablet 3 times a day to reduce the flow of your period (make it lighter) or 2 tablets 3 times a day to stop your periods for a number of days up to about 10 days. This can be helpful for a special event etc.
Hope this helps

When I was younger, my periods were long, painful, and extremely heavy. I didn't realize it was extremely heavy until I went to see a doctor to get tests before I got married. She told me I was anemic and that I was losing more blood than was normal during my period. She put me on iron pills, which I take dutifully everyday of my life.

Suddenly my period was manageable. My energy went up and I didn't cramp so much. And my eight day period went happily to a 3-4 day period. If you aren't anemic, this won't help you, but you never know until you get checked.

it really depends on if you want kids right now or not... if you are wanting to wait another 5-8 years on children I would suggest trying the IUD. I have had mine for two years and I have had only one really bad period and I think that was mainly my nerves that month. But I don't have a period most months and when I do have a period its usually just light spotting and lasts about aday or so. But before you decide to do anything, you need to research your options and talk to your doctor about it.

I usually avoid anything with caffeine(coffee, tea... etc) because it makes my flow heavier. One of my friends avoid caffeine too as well as anything cold because it makes her flow heavier.

You have to try it out and see what your body reacts to, then avoid it the next time your period comes.

I find exercise also does help a bit.
