McDonalds is so named because the original restaurant in San Bernardino, California was founded by Richard (****) and Maurice (Mac) McDonald. They operated a walk-up restaurant where they sold small, inexpensive burgers by the bag, as well as dozens of milkshakes. Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonalds as we know it today was a Multi-Mixer salesman at the time (1953-54) and he heard about a place out in California that was running eight 5-spindle Multi-Mixers at a time, went out to see the operation, and was able to get a contract with the brothers to open McDonalds restaurants across the country (they weren't interested in expanding, themselves...but it was okay with them if Ray went national)

As for Ronald McDonald, he was thought up by an operator on the east coast, made a few local commercials, and was adopted by the corporation...as for why "Ronald"...it rhymes with McDonald...

BTW: the first national commercials with Ronald McDonald had Willard Scott (chubby white weather guy on the "Today" show) as Ronald

Free's answer is indeed correct. McDonald's is still called McDonald's but is referred to in Chinese as 麦当劳 (Mai Dang Lao). I have been to Chinese McDonald's several times in Zhuhai and Guangzhou and they basically have the same stuff on the menu.
