It is an international effort that started in the later half of the 20th century. There are so many people that worked on it no one person is given credit.

Until we developed the seismograph we were only having assumption about earth layers. After studying the seismograph picture recorded the earthquake waves only we leaned about earth layers. Because different waves from earthquake behaves differently when it travels through earth core. The Richter scale was developed in the year 1935.
