As before, but if you want a newspaper that reports more in the vernacular (i.e. slang), try the Sydney Daily Telegraph.

The Australian was designed to report about the nation's capital to Australia and Australia to the Nation's Capital.

The Sydney Morning Herald is a Sydney based news paper.

The Australian is a News Limited Newspaper (run by Rupert Murdock who runs Fox News in America)

I live in China but I still read the Sydney Morning Herald simply because it is one of the best Newspapers with one of the highest standards in journalism in the world.

I would go with the Sydney Morning Herald www.smh.com.au. The section title Column 8 covers all sorts of little local issues brought up readers, and is good for learning about the Australian outlook on life.

I used to read both of them every day when I was working. They are owned by different companies, The Australian is News Limited (Murdoch) and the SMH is Fairfax which also owns the Melbourne Age.

The Australian is far right wing in most of its commentaries but it does have Philip Adams to compensate. It usually gines a little more international news but both have an excellent coverage.

The Australian has the crossword from The Times in London, the best crossword puzzle in the world. The SMH has a good crossword but it is much easier.

As mentioned SMH is Sydney based. Began 1831 as 'Sydney Herald'. Excellent articles. Many categories including IT and business.

Here's a link to a very short dictionary of Australian slang:

In Australia the SMH is called "Granny". My father refers to "The Australian" as "only just a newspaper". It was supposed to be a national circulation daily. I have not looked at it for years. The Canberra (capital city) newspaper is not "The Australian" but the "Canberra Times", which is not a Murdoch publication.

All these have special IT and business sections, but tend to specialise on say IT one day per week. They do not use a lot of slang. However you will get good Australian English from the SMH and "The Australian"

They are both full of trash, but SMH has a good Drive pull out section on Fridays.
