The capital of Spain today is Madrid, main city of the Comunidad autonomica of Madrid. The name apparently comes form and old arab town called Maherit, built over an ancient sacred santuary to the Mediterranean Godess Cibeles. The arab wall still stands and parts can be seen near the Palacio Real en la cuesta de San Vicente. It was there that the Christian settlers hid the image of the virgin Mary, later known as Nuestra Señora de la Almudena (patron virgin of Madrid), because they found the image inside the wall or al-mu-dayna. The cristian hid it to defend it from arab efforts to recover their town. The virgin appeared by miracle when the old cristians following the instructions of the virgin circled the area playing trumpets, much as Joshua did with Jerico, and suddenly part of the wall came down and there was the image of the virgin. We, the Madrileños, also called Gatos, for the ability of crawling and escalating walls during the reconquista, call it many different ways e.g. "el foro", "los madriles", or Madrí without pronouncing the final d.
