There's not really anyway to help someone become a poet, they just kind of fin their own way. I guess though the best start is to read a lot of poetry so you can decide which styles of writing you like and why, then go from there.

Write about anything that comes to you, don't necessarily try to make it a rhyming poem, but focus on what you want to say and how -essentially it just comes with time and effort. There may also be courses that you could take if you want to go that route (try your local college for night courses perhaps or open university).

You definately need to start with a book. The thing about poetry is that there is reason to the rhyme. There is a structure to each poem and therin lies the compliment to the harmonics. Iambic Pentameter is used often in poetry. A good book containing the structure elements of poetry will help you understand the difficulty and creativity involved.

The best way is to read what other people have written, both classical poets and modern poets. I took a Sophomore English class in college called "Introduction to Poetry" and that really opened my eyes as to what modern poetry is.

read loads and loads of poetry...decide what you like about it, what you don't like about it. How are they contructed? etc.
Then have a go yourself..and DON'T think writing poetry is easy...cos it ain't..poems need re-drafting..just like stories, except..when you redraft a poem, you may just add or take out punctuation, same with a word..here and there...the chnages are not always obvious..but they generally help the poem flow more.
There's loads of books on how to write poetry..grab one...read it..and follow the instructions.
