I have a USB thumbdrive that supports private & public partitions. With their software itself I removed the private partition and so it now has only public partition. When I clicked on My Computer > Manage > Disk Management, I noted that my USB drive actually had 856mb (as usable, allocated) and about 121mb marked as unallocated. Is there a way to utilize this unallocated space also so that I can have nearly 971mb. When I right click on the "unallocated partition" the option "Create new partition" is disabled. Could you please help me utilize this unallocated partition? Do you know of any software that would help?

This utility did the trick for my Kingston 2GB DataTraveler USB key. It will format the _whole_ thing, so make sure to save any important data to another location first. It says it's for HP, but it works fine on other USB devices, too.

Windows-based Format Utility for HP Drive Key or DiskOnKey USB Device version 2.00.006 A (6 Feb 04)

HOW TO USE:
1. Plug the USB device into an available USB port.

2. Download the SoftPaq to a temporary directory on your hard drive. The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.

3. Run the downloaded SoftPaq EXE file to unpack program files. This will silent-install the format utility. During installation, if prompted to overwrite any files, answer Yes to all to continue software install.

4. After a successful installation, the installation files and temporary directories may be deleted.

5. The installation will create a "C:\Drivekey" directory by default. To run the Windows GUI Format utility, browse into this directory and run "HPUSBFW.EXE". It will display the familiar Windows format GUI, but will format a USB key instead. Make sure to have your USB data saved and your USB key plugged in before you run the utility.

you are correct in using disk manager , where your not correct is in the partitioning , just because it's unallocated does not mean it's not partitioned , the best thing to do is move the files off the thumb drive and reformat the thumb drive . then move your files back
