I.E. Lloyds has told me they no longer "do that". Is it then safe to pay in a cheque at that bank without a paying in book?

good question i would rather some proof that i hav paid money in

The only reason I can think of is that they loose so many that they no longer want you to have any proof the Cheque ever existed.

My suggestion ? Photo-copy the cheque (both sides) before paying it in ..
