A novel idea, set time limits for public assistance! Don't just hand out checks and other benefits, make them earn them by civic work, such as day care help for young mothers, picking up trash along highways, delivering and prepairing meeels on wheels , cleaning bed pans, etc. in hospitals espically veterans and county or city hospitals, have them working at least 30 hours a week while they look for a job may enstil somesort of values, rahter than promoting generations of welfare families. Also drug test them, if they are able to afford marijuana, cocccaine, or other illegal drugs cut them off , remove their dependent children, and let them starve

I still want you to run for congress........ the Democrats would have you shot forr this though it does not support the Idealogy of keeping the Poor poor! Look at how they screwed the Blacks in America.
Just a side note though about Slavery. I recall a story of why American Indians were not used extensivly as Slaves. It seems due to the fact that so many were here and available it would have been millions of times cheaper than dragging Blacks Back from Africa. It was because everytime it was tried the Indians Killed themselves. it was not in the Indian heart to be Slaves. Where as In Africa it had gone so long (thousands of years) that it was more accepted. It was not a happy choice but they once captured understood the concept. Weird Huh?

That sounds nice and might even work in some cases ,but the vast majority could not even pick up trash .
These people are so messed up in the head that they can not concentrate long enough to walk down a stretch of sidewalk 40 feet and remove all the trash .
Just go through a poor neighborhood and see the trash lying 5 feet from a garbage can .
You are some how going to get people to pick up trash by some method I have never heard of .
You want these filthy disease ridden people in a hospital changing bed pans .
You want a person that is going to spit in the food they deliver .
The only thing that keeps prisoners from urinating in the food is that they would be killed by the other prisoners .
A guard stands over them when the prepare the prison staff meals .
You think these people are some how normal and just down on their luck .
Some are ,but the vast majority are such misfits and stupid and angry at the world that I would not want them attempting to do any task .
They would do more harm then good .
It would be easier to give them money and a home then deal with the problems that would arise if you attempted to get even 8 hours a months worth of work out of them .
These welfare people are the lowest of the low, inbreed ,backwards ,ignorant ,disease ridden slime that would be better off put down like a rabid dog . We can not do this so we just need to build a place in the country ship them out to it and well Hitler comes to mind when I think of camps and country side out of sight .

I agree. I am not against welfare at all, I am against lifers. I was on social services during a very tough time in my life. After 9 months I had found myself a job and picked myself up by the shirttails. Without that help I probably wouldn't have been able to do it, but I never expected to stay on welfare for any longer then that. What a sad life it is. I took advantage of the schooling that they offered, applied to many jobs, went to job fairs and did what I had to do to make sure my son and I were self sufficient. I hate that I support lifers with my taxes, and am comfortable with helping people that really need it.
I remember one day after work last year I was on line behind this girl with long fake nails, Nike shoes, Tommy Hilfiger clothes, more jewelry on her then I own and paid with a welfare card. I WAS PISSED. I mean maybe I was brought up that if you are really that hard up you shop at the thrift store, wear $10 sneakers from payless and sell your jewelry to get by. Not use the system for all it's worth and bleed it dry.
**************
Hell, why stop at illegal drugs. If these welfare lifers can afford cigarettes and booze as well, cut them off. I don't see why I should support someones cigarette habit when they can't even afford food. Priorities.

Here Here!!!!!!!!! I agree totally. We have families that have been on welfare for generations, not years.
Take for example, a single mother with one infant child: Here where I live, she can get free housing through HUD. she can get 298 dollars a month in food stamps, she can get heating and coolong assistance checks for her light bill, she can get WIC to buy baby formula, cereals, juices, milk, and cheese with. On top of this, she can get a SSI check, or someother Welfare program check for up to 625 dollars a month.
Now, working for minimum wage, paying taxes, paying childcare, paying your own light bill and rent, buying your groceries, you have less money to work with at the end of the month than the welfare mother. What incentive does anyone have on welfare to get off of it? NONE
I also wholeheartedly agree with the drug testing. I also think there should be a max time limit you can draw welfare, 6 months maybe, no more than a year. And, then after that, you would have to show 3 years of taxable income to be elligible again unless you go to work volunteering like you mentioned above.

Why not make government jobs available solely to those who qualify for welfare. There are lots of jobs available in the postal service as well as many other federal, state, and county levels.
Today 25% of all jobs are government jobs. Considering about 17% of the households in America are on public assistance, the people on welfare could easily be absorbed into the government job market.
MOst government job positions are given to political cronies. Why not give them to the poor.

Check your facts. Welfare is a drop. The sea is filled with many drops. We spend $498 billion on defense. The Iraq war will cost working class tax payers $2 trillion. The amount of welfare given Corporations is 10,000 times greater than Welfare Going to Women and Children. I would support giving the Corporations a hand up instead of a hand out. I will not support any Republican plan to let a elderly man, woman or child starve.

I do believe in many states there is a time limit set on welfare, but I don't believe it works. There needs to be a motivation. I know my state offers state-paid daycare to parents willing to work. There is an abundance of programs out there to help these people find jobs and become more marketable, but they are not "forced" to participate. Or the participate only to fulfill the requirement for their assistance.

I have always believed in that concept of welfare.
*edit* I don't agree that the children should starve. There can be a way to still feed those children without giving the parents a welfare check.

I think you just gave liberals an aneurism with that statement, but you're absolutely correct. Tommy Thompson did some radical things to welfare when he was governor of WI. He was hated by a lot of those ON welfare, but praised by the other 95% that paid for it.

from one real american to another.
this is a great idea. and it just shows what I have been saying for weeks. people in this country have shorter memories than a pot smoker.
this Idea was tried.
under GEORGE BUSH SR.
it was part of is " thousand points of Light" campaign
the repubs gloried in its success.
I remember an article in the paper, of a man who was on wefare for 10 years, but under BUSH SR.'s program
WELFARE TO WORK .
this man became a state trooper under this program and said he owed his life to this great president.
a year later, the program was dropped.
something about a war in Iraq.
last time they made any effort.
