My new angel fish has puffy white growths on his fins...looks like cotton. After reading up I decided this is some sort of fungus. Nothing I am reading makes this sound serious or fatal but he doesn't look well. He seems listless. I am treating the aquarium with Maroxy.
Since adding the new fish, I have tested the water and do have higher levels of Nitrate...but not dangerously high (10ppm). I am doing 20% water changes every 3 days or so. But still I have lost one angel fish and a guppy. I bought Angels at a big chain pet store and suspect they were not well when I got them. Is there anything else I can do for this guy?

If this is a fungus the Maroxy will take care of it within a few days. If it hasn't improved a lot by then, you may be dealing with something else entirely. A bacterial infection called columnaris looks a lot like fungus but can only be treated with antibiotics, so if you don't see an improvement with the fungus treatment switch to maracyn or maracyn 2 and see if that doesn't take care of it.

You may want to try using a different medicine. One that targets body fungus on fish.

Treatments (such as Interpet's Anti Fungus and Bacteria No.8 or Jungle fungus ) stops the fungus spreading and destroys it. The medicine remains active for several days to ensure full healing occurs

Also be sure it is a fingus and not a form of velvet, or other type of ich.
