Absolutely not, never.

The E55 AMG has always had an 8 cylinder engine..

The most recent version of the E55 AMG sedan by Mercedes Benz had a 5.5L Supercharged V8 (now replaced by the E63 AMG, which has - you guessed it - a 6.3L V8, naturally aspirated though)

The previous version of the E55 based on the older E-Class sedan (1996 - 2001 models), also had an 8-cylinder 5.5L engine, also naturally aspirated..

Therefore, I assure you my Ozzie friend that neither Mercedes Benz nor its in-house tuner AMG ever made a 4-cylinder E55, because that simply would not make sense :)

Don't think so AMG is a tuner mostly of bigger Benz cars E-55. S class modified 5.5 liter motor placed in an E class car. The 4 cyl engine mostly says compressior on the trunk and is just supercharged. AMG badging will be everywhere fenders trunk and door jamb.

The number usually refers to the engine capacity. 55 would be 5.5 litres, far too large for a (modern) 4-cyl engine. Most MB 4 cyls are 2.2 litres or less capacity. Most engines over 4 litres are V8s or V12s.
