At walmart today I saw a memory foam mattress top cover for sale. You may want to try one of these first.

I have a top of the line Sealy Mattress. Bought a memory foam topper about 3 years ago for around one hundred dollars.
It works great. However, you need a deeper pocket bottom sheet. Also, you should replace your foam core pillows every year or so.
Noticed memory foam topper possibly needs replacement at this time; edges are starting to wear(rounding over) and foam seems way too easy to compress when rolling over--still decompresses easily. Don't really know about the full mattress types; however the Sealy mattress is still going strong years later.

Memory foam is great - total comfort. I prefer a kingsized waterbed in summer though. Go down to the memory foam store and lie down for a while - you be the judge.

I think they are great. Much better than just the coil spring. See if you can find one in a local store first to try it and see if it works for you.
