The only thing that makes for lan or wan is what IP you assign to it. If it has a public IP its a WAN if you have a private IP its a LAN.

An eithernet card is an eithernet card.

Your VPN can use either address and still work. All that is needed is your router has to pass the VPN traffic to the correct address for the server.
