I am not sure that we are the greatest nation but we're certainly one of the greatest. I believe that we are a unique nation, blessed with abundant land and natural resources and resilient people. Americans have the attitude that anyone who works hard enough can be successful. We are also willing to fight for what we believe in and our government gives us the freedom to do this. Anyone can protest the war, call the president names and support any candidate for public office that they like. The US is not a perfect nation but I wouldn't want to be anywhere else!

Well then in terms of conquest definitely not, the Great Khan of Mongolia had an empire that stretched from China to Europe, during the Pax Britania, Britain's Empire was only second to the Khan's (I would think). The U.S could probably be deemed the greatest nation of the 20th century but comparing it to other empires? Surely the U.S at now is about 330 something years old. That's the same time period that the Spanish Emipre occupied the Philippine Islands and remember that much of America was spanish, the classical empires of Ancient times like Rome, Greece, Persia, Babylon, China, Egypt and even India had empires which lasted for thousands of years. When Europe was grasping with the end of the middle ages, China had the crossbow, the printing press and pike not to mention many more. Arabia was the birhtplace of Algebra, Greece and Egypt: Geometry, yes the U.S was the birthplace of many inventions we use today and surely the U.S is the most powerful nation today but it cannot be deemed as the greatest nation in the history of mankind at this point, we must remember that China is still an independent nation today and up to the 1800's was the most powerful in the world dwarfing her European contemporaries, India was even more powerful than China until it began a steady decline, and even now though America seems more powerful than any European country, Europe's combined GDP is still higher. The United States may have the potential to become the most powerful nation in the history of mankind but so did Portugal during times of conquest, dividing the world with Spain under the treaty of Tordesillas and the treaty of Zaragoza. Portugal had potential as it claimed the eastern part of the world for conquest! The U.S can become the greatest nation, it certainly is technologically advanced and a massive military but can it last for the next millenia? China certainly has, even more, so has India and even Persia now known as Iran. Greece is still a nation, though not as powerful as it was, it still is a nation.

America is comprised of the rejects from all around the world, be they from Europe, Africa, Asia or descended from the the indigenous people. Yet, despite being thrown out of all these other areas, the people banded together and made one of the greatest nations in the history of mankind. The United States has accomplished far more in less time than many other nations combined.
Of course, the Europeans will always argue about how the US is not a great country, and that it is full of ego-tripping idiots. However, keep in mind that most Europeans are jealous. After more than a millenia of history, the greatest accomplishment that Europe has to offer is two World Wars within the same century.

From a strictly materialistic point of view, it may be. It's the only nation that developed the computer and had a decisive contribution to most of modern technology. The economy is also a major point, although the agressive capitalistic trend is not what I understand by healthy economy.
From any other point of view however, it certainly isn't. There are countries 50 times smaller than the US that have a much deeper cultural, spiritual, social, political, judicial (and so on) life than what you can find in America. It's like you guys have pulled all the spirit out of the society, in order to have a "polished" purely material culture.
From my experience, most of the times when you talk about spiritual values to an American, he/she doesn't even understand what you say, as if you'd be talking to a machine. Even when speaking about God, an American does it usually in a very abstract way, regardless whether he/she is an atheist or a religion fundamentalist.

It is the arrogant attitude you show that prevents the USA from being a greater nation as so many Americans think the world revolves around them.
To say in the history of mankind, goes to show how conceited you are. Nations have risen and fallen over the millenia and all have some claim to fame.

I don't personally believe that the US is even a contender for such a title.
When someone says "greatest nation in the history of mankind", I think of the nations responsible for the most mind boggling, staggering and enduring logistical, military, economic and cultural achievements of any time..
So *among* my candidates are: The British Empire, the Roman Empire, the Egyptians and the Greeks.

I do not agree.
All it takes is just one example of an American error to disprove your hypothesis, and I'm absolutely sure there are more than one of such an example.
Off hand I have the Vietnam War from history and the Iraq War from present times.
Also, it probably also had made the greatest errors in the history of mankind. So i really can't bring myself to agree with you.
But I salute you for your patriotism. heheh.

Hear, Hear!! It's good to see someone sticking up for our great country. We spend too much time breast beating for our mistakes, and we do make them. However, we also are the ONLY nation who ever worked to rebuild nations we have defeated in war. Witness Japan and Germany for two examples. We also are the first to jump to aid peoples of other countries who incur natural disasters. I, like you, think we have a great country.
