To a certain extent, every Formula 1 champion arrives there due to the misfortunes of others! Of course, in most cases, the misfortunes of the other drivers are the direct result of having to compete against someone that is having a much much better season.
Alonso did have quite a bit of competition in both 2005 and 2006. In 2005, Kimi Raikkonen provided a fairly constant pressure through most of the season. And Michael Schumacher came very close to winning a championship in 2006. Both fell short for a number of reasons, but the key issue in both cases is that Alonso and Renault put themself into the best position to win by being strong at the end of the year, and keeping enough pace to stay ahead at the end!
That said, in terms of better driver? I think Raikkonen has an edge in car control, overall pace, and passing. Not that Alonso is especially lacking in these areas, just that Raikkonen is exceptional.
However, while Raikkonen may be better when actually behind the wheel, the final skill set to what makes up a successful Formula 1 driver covers more than what is simply done in the race seat during the race. And here there are still alot of questions around Kimi while Alonso has proven himself to be among the best. In testing and working with the team to get reliable and quick car set up to the best possible package for a given race, we saw Alonso and Renault work as well as any combination ever. And more impressively, we've now seen Alonso manage to pull Mclaren together and get them moving the same direction!
Both drivers are likely to have successful years in 2007, though anything short of a championship for either one will likely prove a disappointment. With Ferrari's current pace, team history, and the opening win, Kimi is ahead at the moment. Though Alonso is close and has proven he will be a factor. I am generally not a huge fan of Alonso, though he deserves his due and respect! He's a two time champion and shows all the signs of being a major factor in every season for a long time to come.
For all Kimi's talent behind the wheel, and the fact he is leading at the moment, in terms of overall success, he still has a ways to go to catch up with Fernando.

I've always thought all these "Kimi lost because Alonso is lucky" was all rubbish. Fernando Alonso won because he has the machine and the talent to win. He's consistent and the car is reliable. Do you think Kimi's engine just gave up because he's unlucky. Or Fernando won because he was lucky? Come on, it broke because he pushed it too far! I've seen the "Iceman" make many mistakes on track that cost him. Even Kimi admits that he made mistakes that cost him the 05 championship. Nobody called Fernando unlucky when his engine blew in 07 or when he was given that bogus penalty in Italy or when MS conveniently parked his car in Rascasse.
Kimi has a tendency to overdrive his car. The guy's an engine breaker. When he was leading the Oz GP he overheated his engine near the end. Now, if you were a smart driver you'd figure out that at that part of the race you just have to keep a consistent pace because you've already established a good gap. No need to push and strain your engine when you know that the next race is a real engine breaker, right?
Fernando is the whole package - skilled driver, intelligent, mature and he can deliver. He works well with his team and has more technical insight than Kimi probably has.
A simple answer would be - Who has won more championships? Fernando Alonso.

Alonso is the better driver. He has consistency, maturity, patience and determination. Kimi often acts like a spoilt child, both on and off the track.
Whilst Kimi is admittedly an excellent driver, if Alonso was in a Ferrarri, he would certainly beat Kimi.

I've said it time and time again. The FIA implemented changes in the 2005 season specifically to end Michael Schuamcher's dominance because people stopped watching races because they knew who would win. In 2006 everyone started fresh and Renault had the better car in the first half of the season, while in the second half the Ferrari and Renault were on equal terms. Everyone knows that if Michael's motor didn't quit in Japan, he would be an 8x champion. Alonso got lucky both years, he barely beat Raikonnen in 2005, and due to the Ferrari motor barely won in 2006. He has won two championships by a combined margin of about 15 points. Alonso won't win this year. This is Raikonnen's year, but also look out for Massa, and Heidfeld. Lewis Hamilton is an overated punk, who made a serious mistake claiming he can be champion in three years. Both Alonso and Raikonnen and Sebastian vettel will be racing in three years and they are all better drivers than him.

Kimi is much better. Alonso won the world title in 2005 only because of kimi's poor engine. He won in 2006 only because of Michael's misfortune.

N.O! Wassup with you?? He certainly wasn't given crowns outta others' misfortunes.. He is skillful and the others were not so competitive. That's why.
Alonso is better. He is a consistent driver. Meanwhile Kimi, he's good but abit inconsistent...he relies too much on his car.
