The other answers are pretty good, but I would just add that it would be a good idea to explain to him this isn't right and why. Also, is he watching cartoons or playing computer games where the characters in it hit each other? I had to stop my son watching the old Tom & Jerry for a while for our cat's sake.
You might think it weird to be talking about computer games and 4 year olds, but the most violent kid I ever saw was a 7 year old who had been allowed to play games aimed at teens. This kid was scary, believe me, and would go for his mother with a knife. I just put this in case there are parents out there who do that - I am sure you do not!

Ewww - lots of gue everywhere - Poor frogs - they are a gardeners best friend you know especially if you grow lettuce or other nice juicy leaved plants - Frogs eat slugs and snails, slugs and snails love eating juicy leaf plants.
I wander where your son learnt that was a good thing to do, has Daddy been setting a good example!
PS Let nature do its thing and teach your son to respect life and perhaps be less destructive.

Not at all. My son is 13 months and if he could get a hold of a rubber mallet i'm sure he would beat the crap out of me, the frogs, the neighbors and everyone else. That's what toddlers do. It's not out of the ordinary.

I think it's relatively normal as he's only 4, little kids do do strange things. But obviously you need to explain to him clearly why he's not to do it. Oh, and hide that mallet!

it's kinda funny when I first read it...4 yr old boys will do the weirest stuff. Is he one to put them in his pockets too. You should probably eventually teach him to not smash the froggies. Just like you would teach him not to do other bad things. Because you really can't go through life smashing froggies. Imagine me out by the pond every morning smashing froggies...it would look pretty weird.

Yes it is. However, usually around the age of 4 children develop the ability to understand that their actions can potentially harm others. Before this age, they only have a concept of what is painful to them. " Theory of mind."

He's a nasty little brat. Give him a clout, and confiscate the mallet

lol. sounds like my brothers when they were that age. try spending time showing him how interesting and fragile they are and that it is not fair to try and squish them.we did this with my brothers unfortunatly they then spent all day making sure they were all safe by collecting them in a bucket we then had to explain that they were happier where they were found but at least they were not squashed.

boys will do stuff like that, the first time it may be cute, but you really need to talk to him, dont fuss and carry on but just tell him that frogs were put on earth by God for a reason, and its wrong to kill ( iam not sure what they are good for but God put them here)
