We cannot judge the greatness or folly of an empire. While that empire still exists.Centuries from now students will marvel that an insignificant little country once held sway over virtually every corner of the globe. These same scholars will acknowledge that in they're time the spoken language in many many countries is english. Not a bad achievment. This will be the british empire's lasting gift to the world. No other empire had such a lasting enduring effect.Whether you're anti/pro british or not will have not the slightest impact on the that future, Of british conquest.

Absolutely pro.

There was an awful lot of good that came out of the British Empire - not least of which was raising the standards of living in some very poor areas of the world.

Admittedly there was some appalling behaviour associated with Empire as well (isn't there always?) but I believe that, in general, Victoria tried to preside over an Empire run on Christian values and ethics.

Like every empire that lived before it, the British Empire has good aspects and bad aspects. No empire was purely virtuous. Every empire has done good and bad. When the British empire's good things are balanced with its bad things, the overall result was positive.

At least the British empire wasn't like its Muslim predecssors. They only thing that they cared about was converting people to islam. They used horrendous methods like raping women, burning men and destroying people's places of worship. At least the British didn't do any of this. Also the British aren't responsible for the world's biggest genocide (by muslims against hindus).

I have read about the British Empire, but I do need to read a lot more. Personally, I am pro when it comes to the spreading of civilisation - the Commonwealth, medicine, art, clothing, tea, science, food, literature, and more. I am neutral when it comes to the wars fought, the institution of slavery, the spread of diseases, the unfair trade practices, and more.

What I don't understand is why we refer to this era as "Victorian", when the queen had so little influence on events. When Albert died, she hid away from her subjects while change was stirring around her. Britain, a great nation in spite of her non rule, became the greatest colonial power of the time. Perhaps "Gladstonian" or "Disraelian" would be better names.
