I would recommend that if you are vegetarian, you might not want to eat at McDonalds. The milk shakes may not have anything derived from a pig, but it does come from cow's milk--and I actually read in a book about 4-5 years ago that the fries have beef flavoring added to them.

All their milkshakes are vegetarian EXCEPT for Strawberry - which has the juice of cochineal BEETLES squeezed into it for the red colour. It's a commonly used red food colouring and yes, it's made from cochineal BEETLES. Urghh.
PLEASE NOTE: This only applies to McDonald's UK. I don't know about these newfangled American 'Thickshakes' as we don't get them over here. Sorry.

The milk shakes have in them:

Milkshake Base:

Milk, Sugar, Whey Powder, Glucose Syrup, Cream
(40% Butterfat), Stabiliser (E412 Guar Gum, E407
Carageenan (Standardised with sugars), Dextrose,
E410 Locust Bean Gum.

Banana Flavour Milkshake Syrup:
Sugar, Water, Glucose Syrup, Natural Colouring
Agent (E100 Curcumin), Banana Flavour, Natural
Colouring Agent (E160c Paprika Extract), Acidifier
(E330 Citric Acid), Preservative (E202 Potassium
Sorbate).

Chocolate Flavour Milkshake Syrup:

Water, Sugar, Dextrose, Low-fat Cocoa Powder
(6.6%), Colouring Agent (E150 Caramel), Sugar
Syrup, Salt, Acidifier (E338 Phosphoric Acid),
Flavour, Vegetable Fat, Cocoa Mass, Acidifier
(E330 Citric Acid), Emulsifier (E322 Soya Lecithin),
Preservative (E202 Potassium Sorbate).

Strawberry Flavour Milkshake Syrup:
Water, Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Strawberry Juice
Concentrate, Acidifier (E330 Citric Acid),
Strawberry Flavour, Preservative (E202 Potassium
Sorbate), Natural Colouring Agent (E120
Cochineal).

So there ya go - no pig fat! Although if you really wanna be strict Vegitarian many "natural colouring agents" contain insects.

Also it's crap food and you shouldn't be eating it anyway!

I beleive they are veggie. They definately use thickening agents and the like but I don't think its any kind of animal fat. There should be a leaflet called food facts in every Mcdonalds so this will tell you for sure. They certainly aren't good for you but they sure are tasty.

McDonalds like all restaurants and food services has to give you a complete list of ingredients if you ask for it. There are a lot of rumors about McDonald's and they are all urban legends invented for the shock value and the entertainment of the storyteller.
