World of Warcraft is the most popular online MMORPG, however there is a monthly fee on top of purchasing the actual game. If you're looking for cheaper options, you're rather limited - but you might find some free online among the graphic-less MUDs of yesterday.

Try Eve-Online. Its a fun (if complicated) Sci-fi MMORPG. And since everything is in the same galaxy, you don't have to woory about matching up servers or factions.
Guildwars is good that way too.
World of Warcraft is really popular, but you have to match up servers and factions, or you won't be able to play together.

Personally, I recommend Guildwars.
No monthly fee, better looking and more refined than World of Warcraft- which I also play on and off. Just make sure that you and your female friend buy the same campaign (Prophecies, Nightfall or Factions), or you won't be able to play in the same areas.

I suggest point and click games. They are fun and some of them are very engaging. Some of them like the Escape from the room series are very amongst popular online games.
