My 12 year old step son is having his appendix removed later today. We were due to have him for the Easter holidays, his mother says that he can still be picked up on Thursday (she is going away for Easter with her new boyfriend).
Should we still have him for the holidays, the reasons I am concerned, is that we live a 3 1/2 hour journey from his home, and we have 2 quite boisterous, children (4 and 7 years), I am worried that the journey will be uncomfortable for him. How long will his recovery take?

In reply to Cavorim - no, I am not concerned about any inconvenience to myself, I am only concerned with his wellbeing.

Answering from my own personal experience, I was recovered, and couldn't wait to get out of the hospital in less than 24 hours. It's kinda hard sitting up by yourself for the first two days, but after that, its really easy. He should be fine to travel by car, as long as you let him sit in the front, and let him recline the seat a little bit, even for three and a half hours. Oh, and I don't know if his doctor said this, but I was told I couldn't eat anything more solid than chicken soup for the first week, so I was on a pudding, ice cream, applesauce, and soup diet for a week. So be prepared for that. Otherwise, let him rest as much as he wants, and make sure he takes his antibiotics he's most certainly going to be prescribed, and he should be fine.

I dont think of it quite is appendicitis. What you're describing sounds to me like an ovarian cyst. those little devils harm something undesirable and could lead human beings to have self assurance its appendicitis. i might take some ibuprofen and lay down with with a warmth pad placed over the abdomen area the place you're hurting. additionally make an appointment inclusive of your gyn familiar practitioner for an examination. There are various style of cysts, none of them would desire to be taken gently. you will desire a doctor for an assessment. if your soreness escalates any extra, get to the emergency room. The cysts would desire to be rupturing and thats soreness such as you have not at all felt earlier! i desire this enables, hun. shop us published!

You need to ask his doctor for advice. The hospital may wish to send him to you with a letter explaining his history in case he is taken ill whilst he is with you and needs care from your local health services.

It partly depends on how severe his appendicitis was in the first place as to how ill he will be feeling.

I can imagine that such a journey wouldn't be ideal given that he won't be feeling fantastic!

If there was an issue the hospital would want to keep him in. He should be fine but a bit tender for a few days. Don't let him play with the other kids and tell them not to be rough with him.

If he had the surgery laperscopically the recovery should go well.
I would think that the child's mother would change her plans if she thinks the trip is too much for him.

The child's doctor should be asked this question.

I think his mother should change her plans...........poor child may well need her. After all when children are poorly they always seem to want their mums. I wouldn't dream of going anywhere if a loved one of mine had recent surgery.
But to answer your question, the journey will tire him.

If they were able to remove the appendix laporascopically, he will be feeling better than if they had to make an incision. Any travel needs to be OK'd with his surgeon.

No, you are worried that his visit will be inconvenient for you. A little discomfort wil not hurt him and I am sure you can keep your other two children under control.

your other kids might injure him e.g. punch him in the stomach etc. the appendix wound is usually small, but the kid needs rest.

no easy answer, his mom probably may not be wiling to quit her holiday, otherwise you won't be asking this question.
