some auto transmission have 5 some only have 3, depends greatly on your gearing and what the car/truck is designed for. same goes for manuel, i have seen up to a 6 speed and as low as 3 speed manuel.
So in short it depends mainly on what the car/truck is designed for plus gearing, what motor, and age of car.

If you have a fairly Modern vehicle.
A so called four speed automatic will certainly also will have
the Overdrive system. which will get your Rpm's to drop
about another two hundred. But with a Manual gearbox.
You would be complicating the issue by adding a overdrive
and they can do it. But you would have to understand how to shift it into overdrive. A bit tricky at first.
So it would be easier to just make it another gear instead.

Mainly because automatic transmission is very complicated inside.
However, latest automatic transmissions have up to 7 discrete gears, and CVT technically has infinite number of grears. :)

its called 4 speed + overdrive in reality because its an automobile, if it turned right into a stick shift then ya it should be called a 5 speed, because in a guide transmission in a 5 speed the fifth equipment is overdrive equipment and in a 6 speed the sixth equipment is overdrive, also in an automobile transmission it would not choose the Overdrive to operate correct so it would not choose it, overdrive is barely for street and interstate using so don't have it in Overdrive for familiar well-known using until eventually you pass at streetlevel or interstate an automobile gained't have an Overdrive equipment until eventually it says its Overdrive with the O with the D in it, if a 5 speed computerized shouldn't have the O with the D interior it then its only a 5 speed without Overdrive, the equipment ratios of the 5 speed without Overdrive should be in the course of one yet another
