Historians must restrict themselves to documentable fact, which may give clues to the conflicts and personalities involved but cannot fill them out. True historical fiction tries to do that, basing itself on fact but extending it through the invention of circumstance and dialogue, fictional but implied by the known events and what may be inferred from the sources. Shakespeare's histories, for example -- wrong in many respects as we today know them to be -- put words that were never recorded into the mouths of historical figures that he assumed they reasonably might have spoken.

True historical fiction is very much to be distinguished from the sort of romance novel set in an historical period -- bodice-rippers, I believe they are called.

I thought historical fiction was a novel that has elements of historical truth? Like what Edward Rutherfurd writes (Sarum, London, etc.) or Phillipa Gregory (The Other Boleyn Girl). They start with people or events from history, then build a narrative around that.

What does google or wikipedia give you? (You're probably going to have to do a bit of work to get three pages out of it!)
