Americans are known for taking the least amount of vacation time compared to citizens of other nations.
We recently beat the Japanese (notorious workaholics) in length of average work hours per week.
Two jobs is quite common here, also -- one to pay the bills, the other to pay for medical insurance (if they're companies don't offer that, which many increasingly don't!)
People in America work pretty hard. If the American Dream were true, there'd be millionaires all over the place.

I've worked my butt off all my life, and I'm still a peeon loser. It doesn't seem too true to me, but maybe things will change. I'm not old yet.
