As I was leaving the mall, I realised I was low on ciggerettes. I drove to the lot near CVS but all the spots were taken. I stupidly parked in a handicap spot, thinking I would only be a minute. As I came back to my car I noticed the Mall security guy leaving from where my car was parked. Sure enough there was a pink little paper under my windshield wiper. After reading the paper over many times I remember it clearly stated that " My car was observeved parking in a handicap spot." the time and date were also on there as well as my licence plate number and brief vehicle description. The note did not have the word "ticket" anywhere on it, nor did it have anything written about me owing them any money or having to pay a fee, or ANY follow up instructions at all. I no longer am able to find the note. So now my friend tells me that cops will just pull me over if they happen to check my licence for unpaid parking tickets. Is this a ticket or a warning? Do I owe any money? How do I find out?

You did not receive a summons, only police officers can issue summons for a court appearance. This was a security guard working for the mall.

Just disregard it, it just a notice that you were parked wrong.

No you did not get a ticket. If this were an actual parking violation citation it would state clearly at the top that it was a PARKING VIOLATION.

It would also have different boxes for the type of violation.. experied meter.... fire hydrant.. ect...

What you recieved is known as a warning... they have a description of your car and plate number IF they find that auto parked in a handicap spot in the future they WILL call the local PD and have you ticketed.

You can call your local courthouse (there are special numbers for ticket verifications, check the phone book) and ask about it.

It is likely that the security guy just put a warning on your car. No security company has the ability to actually ticket you. They'd either have to call the police and have them do it, or have your car towed.

Since it is bad business to tow customers' cars away, most places will just issue warning slips like this. I wouldn't worry about it.

Contact the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) license department and explain to them that you want to check against any outstanding tickets against either your driver's license or your vehicle registration.
If something is listed there, they'll also give you instructions for payment.
If there's nothing listed there, forget about it.
