i recently acquired some fish from moving room mates. there are 7 neon tetras, 2 comets, and 5 baby guppies (about a month old). my own creatures are a male beta and a female african dwarf frog. can any of these fish be tank mates?

*note: i'd originally put the beta in the tank with the comets and tetras as i'd read they could be tank mates with non-aggresive fish (& no other male beta). when i did this he promptly attacked and killed a tetra. i'm not sure if this was a random act of violence due to the aggrivation of moving him or if his personal preferance is just too anal to have tank friends. (and i haven't had time to re-test his compatibility by placing him in the tank in a baggie to see his reaction.)
Any fish advice on this situation would be great as i'm feeling a little overwhelmed!
Thanks!

The tetras and guppies should be fine together, and the frog with them as long as you're sure it's a dwarf (not an African clawed frog) - although I've heard of a few fish-eating dwarfs, they're not common.

Bettas are usually peaceful with other tankmates (except other bettas), but there are individuals with more aggressive personalities than others. You might want to consider adding lots of hiding places (silk plants are good) and letting the tetras have the tank to themselves for a while before you try introducing the betta again - this let's them find escape routes before they might need them. You can also place the betta near the tank, so the fish can see each other and get accustomed to each other's presence - the bettas behavior may be a good indication of whether or not you'll ever be able to keep them in the same tank.

As for the goldfish - these are coldwater fish and your others are tropicals - they really shouldn't be kept together, because they have different temperature needs.

How big of a tank? Thats probably more important.

comets?... definitely not.

Tetras and guppies are fine. Mixing neon tetras with bettas is a gamble. Some co-exist fine, while others have problems. There are many cases similar to yours where bettas attack neons. I believe it has to do with the coloration of the tetras, too close to another male betta's.

Even if your betta settles down he may be in for some trouble. Though neons are usually peaceful, flowing fins may be too much of a temptation to resist. It's possible to have a tank where the neons don't nip the betta, but it's a big chance. And unless you want to deal with fin rot (an infection in nipped fins) and other health problems then I would find another home for the betta.

relies upon very much on the size and structure of your tank. My first (and nevertheless my merely) tank in my small residence is a 40 4 gallon pentagon-shaped nook tank. I chosen to pass with South American/significant American community fish (a million angelfish, 0.5 dozen tetras, 4 cories, 2 otocinclus and three marble hatchets). it really is strong b/c the tetras and the angel all swim in the middle, the hatchets are on the right, all and sundry else lives specially on the bottom - extremely fills out all the areas. i have had that setup for over a 12 months now, and barring any complications I assume it to very last a lengthy time period. i have in no way regretted it. you would provide that a try - it really is a incredibly low-value setup too. it is merely my personal adventure with it. If I had the area for a much better and larger time-honored rectangle tank like a fifty 5 gallon i ought to intense seem at African cichlids or perhaps an all- angelfish tank. consider it, and verify out no longer to hurry right into a decision. set up a strong rapport inclusive of your puppy save, and verify out to make arrangements the position you are able to commerce fish in and out often times until eventually you've what you want. because in spite of all the planning in the international, extremely some it extremely is trial and mistake. strong success. :)

comets? they absolutely CANNOT be placed with any of them due to the fact that it likes coldwater. I think the betta mite eat the neon tetras, so I'd say the frog and the tetras. :-)

the beta will probably kill the other tank mates, I would assume that it hasn´t killed the frog yet only because it is a frog
