No. What makes a hair band is of course the hair and hairspray, but then that would make almost every 70's and 80's band a hair band.
1. A hair band has to originate and die in the 80s.
2. The hair and their clothing were costumes and they didn't look that way unless somebody told them too.
3. Most were created bands from a producer rather than formed on their own.
4. They did metal and pop ballads.

Aerosmith debuted their first album in 1973. They had long hair with natural style, which was the norm for musicians of that era.

The term "hair band" referred to a certain type of band in the '80s (and sadly, creeping into the '90s). These bands took the whole hair thing to a whole new level, fluffing and spraying their huge 'dos and mostly playing cheesy pop-metal.

Aerosmith was going through some growing pains and wavered somewhat in that direction, but ultimately stayed true to their blues/rock roots and have been very successful as a band, while all of the hair bands have come and gone.

They really towed the line, much in the way Ozzy is metal, but flirted with hair metal. I lean towards not, because part of hair bands seemed to be that you had to suck, but since not everyone thinks Aerosmith is good, it's too close to call. Call it a draw and bet on something else.

Aerosmith isn't a hair band (in my opinion) because they were a successful band in the 70's, before hair-rock was the thing.
Now Mötley Crüe, is a hair band.

When I was a fan of them, they considered them as such.
