Ours open in the front and we took out the nests at least 6 times this Spring and then finally gave up. The sparrows have taken over 3 of the houses and they will have at least 3 broods between now and fall.

Sir Readalot's answer, while it has its humorous merits, does not take into consideration that English sparrows can be a bit of a nuisance when one is attempting to cultivate the finer feathered creatures. Eastern Bluebirds, on the other hand, must be courted. They prefer a more aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. I would suggest you do a bit of research. Stock your bird feeders with seeds that are more likely to attract them. Keep fresh water available. At the opposite side of your home, in an equally ideal nesting spot, set up some houses, feeders and water sources that are likely to attract the sparrows and perhaps that will entice them more than the bluebird houses do. If your uninvited sparrow squatters have been nesting on this site in previous years, you may be forced to relocate the bluebird houses. Best of luck.

Put up a sign. Be blunt about it; birds don't pick up on subtle hints.
