The mythical city of Babylon.

Babylon, the legendary city, is indeed, the most famous ancient city in the whole World. It was the capital of ten Mesopotamian dynasties starting with the dynasty of King Hammurabi (1792-1750 BC); the 6th king of the 1st dynasty; reaching prominence as the capital city of the great kingdom of Babylonia. The last dynasty at which Babylon achieved its zenith, is well known particularly of its 2nd king, Nebuchadnezzar II (605-563 BC), to whom most of Babylon's existing buildings belongs.

Where Babylon really was? That is another question.

There is a ziggurat in or near Babylon in modern day Iraq which some speculate may be the original Tower of Babel -- not a good place for on-location filming right now.

Babel (Hebrew: בָּבֶל‎; Bavel) is the name used in the Hebrew Bible for the city of Babylon (Akkadian Babilu), notable in Genesis as the location of the Tower of Babel.

In Gen. 11:9, the name of Babel is etymologized by association with the Hebrew verb balal, "to confuse or confound": Balal is regarded as a contraction of earlier *balbal. The name bab-ilu in Akkadian means "gate of god" (from bab "gate" + ilu "god"). The word "bab-el" can also be seen to mean "gate of god" (from bab "gate" + el "god").

[edit] Genesis
Babel is mentioned in Genesis 10:10 as the home city of Nimrod.

[10] And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. [11] Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, [12] And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city. (KJV)
According to Genesis 11:1-9, mankind, after the deluge, traveled from the mountain where the ark had rested, and settled in 'a plain in the land of Shinar' (or Senaar). Here, they attempted to build a city and a tower whose top might reach unto Heaven, the Tower of Babel.

The attempt to build the Tower of Babel had angered God who, in his anger, made each person involved speak a different language which ultimately halted the project and scattered and disconnected the people across the planet.

[edit] Babylonian captivity
Main article: Babylonian captivity
Babel features in the prophecies of Jeremiah, and Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem is told in 2 Kings. The Book of Daniel is set at time of the Babylonian captivity. Such later references to Babel are normally translated into the more familiar Greek form "Babylon".

There isn't a place named Babel. In the bible, there was a place named Babel but no one really knows where it was. It's assumed to have been in Iraq.

I would imagine that they filmed in Morocco because it's a safe and friendly place to film.

It is not Iraq, it is in the outskirt of Morrocco. I can't pronounce the name of the village, much less write it down.

Babel is mentioned in the bible and that is it. Movies are shot wherever it's convenient and cheap. Rarely is it shot where they want you to think its taking place.

It never did; it's fiction. The name comes from Semitic roots meaning "gate to god".
