I started with 4 small hostas about 3 years ago and now it looks like there are about 25-30 of the 2 types, about 50-60 now. Is it time to transplant some now? Should I wait until fall?
What happens if they keep propogating as is? I use natural compost and mulch well over winter.

Late spring to late summer sould be a good time. Sounds like you could have done it 2 years ago and last year too, but it isn't necessary. When separating, you should wait until they are at their best for best results. If you do it before flowering, you could inhibit flower production, but you can still do it. Your winter treatments are working great! I've heard that, left alone, the bunch expands but eventually the center dies out. I would think that with the compost and mulch the old dead stuff would compost too and young ones could come up in their place.

Hostas are not a bulb. They are an extremely hardy plant, and can be moved anytime. Blossoming may slow down, but the plant will do fine whenever you split them.
