What you're thinking of is the Chimney Sweeping Log. It is good to use, but it doesn't exactly do what it says. It loosens up the creosote that has bonded to the flue so it can be removed easier.

A chimney sweep will come to your house for about $100 and you'd be good to go in less than an hour AND there won't be any mess.

If there were something that would release the gunk in the flue, where do you think it would go? Some of it would go up, but a lot of it would come down. You'd have to vacuum it, but some of the dust would be so fine that it would go right through your filter and back into the air. The chimney sweeps keep the vacuum outside so anything that goes through the filter remains outside.

Please just clean it or have it cleaned. In theory the cleaning logs burn at a higher temperature thus removing the gunk. However, instead the creosote that builds up can catch fire from the higher temperatures and really ruin your day to say nothing of your house.

The added benefit of hiring a chimney sweep is they will inspect the inside of your fireplace, flue, stack and fire arrestor. Safety always comes first.

I am not remembering the name of the product but there is a "fire log" that can be placed in the fire log kiln and lit which will help "burn away" the soot from the inside of the walls. You should be able to find this product at any hardware store. Good luck.

The safest way is to get a chimney brush the size you need and clean it. If the soot and tar catches on fire it could cause a lot of damage or even burn down your home.

The Logical way is to get a Chimney Sweeper to do it, these days they have a lot of modern tools, its effective & not too expensive.
