I realize that they once occupied the territory after WWI through a mandate, but how does the UK foreign policy respond to the issue today?

The United Kingdom does not recognize Kurdistan as independent but threat it as part of modern Iraq. Its foreign policy respects the existence of an independent Iraq with Kurdistan as part of its territory.
