Most people start smoking when they are in their teens and are addicted by the time they reach adulthood. Some have tried to quit but have returned to cigarettes because smoking is such a strong addiction. It is a habit that is very difficult to break. There are many different reasons why people smoke.

Three of the main reasons that young people smoke are to look mature, to be like their friends, and to experiment. Since teens see older people all around them smoking, especially their parents and relatives, they smoke to act older. If their friends or peers smoke, they may feel pressured into doing the same to be accepted. The last reason is the excitement of experimenting with something that is forbidden. In Massachusetts it is against the law for anyone under 18 years old to smoke. Usually parents do not allow their under age teens to smoke. Therefore, smoking becomes very attractive. It is exciting to get cigarettes and sneak away to smoke without being caught.

Adults smoke for other reasons. They may have a lot of stress and pressures because of economic and personal problems. They may be unemployed or working but not making enough money to take care of themselves and their families. They may be homeless, or they may be dealing with alcohol or cocaine/heroin addictions. Some may be in bad marriages or relationships in which there is physical and/or verbal abuse. All these people may smoke to feel relaxed or to give them energy while going through a hard time.

Whether young or old, some people smoke to control their weight. Smokers, on the average, weigh seven pounds less than non-smokers. Smoking reduces a person's appetite. It lessens his/her sense of taste and smell. This could be why ex-smokers gain weight after quitting cigarettes. Food tastes and smells so much better.

Finally, there are people who say they love to smoke. Smoking gives them pleasure. It just makes them feel good.

Great question!
People smoke because they put the cigarette to their lips and then inhale. Just being a smarty. Actually, if there were one thing, one action, that you could remove from the smoking scenario, a person would not be able to smoke more than once, What do you think that one thing is? It is essential to being able to do anything human. HINT...Let me ask you a question: If you didn't remember that you smoked, would you light up another cigarette? Probably not. Smoking is a habit, but if you did not remember that you smoked you just plain would not remember to tell yourself that you needed another cigarette. Thinking is memory, and since you remember that you smoke, you think about smoking, which is why you tell yourself that you need another cigarette. If you did not remember that you smoked, how could you tell yourself that you needed to smoke? Thinking is memory. If you do not remember it, you cannot think of it. All habits like this are created by the conversation that you have with yourself. It just happens so quickly, because you are so good at it, that you do not see it.

I used to HATE smoking, I thought it was the grossest thing in the world, swore I would never smoke and stuff.. well.. I did. Started when I was 11, didn't really "smoke", just puffed and blew out, when I was 12 I started inhaling, I told myself I'd quit when I turned 18. That never happened, guess I got addicted and forgot how much I once hated it. Am now 21 1/2 yrs old and have quit for the past month. Was so hard, but I wonder why I ever did now. Now that I stopped.. My mom stinks like smoke, ashtrays are soo gross cleaning em out at work, they stink bad (I'm a maid), ciggy's in general turn me off, but at the same time, I want one last drag more times then I'd like to admit.

its a silly thing that I started when I was at school, its an addiction, if it wasn't then so many people would not do it. The same with drugs, teenagers try it, either like it or hate it. In all honesty I started smoking at school and actually thought I looked cool, now I find myself in my 40's and realise its an expensive waste of time.

I don't know why in this day and age. I guess the surgeon general's warnings and all this cancer is meaningless to people.

I don't see why its cool either. You stink when you smoke, your teeth yellow, your lungs turn black and your mouth cells die.

Unfortunately, the smokey smell actually jumps more on us non-smokers and leaves our hair and clothes smelling worse off

Its really a disgusting habit.

curiosity, posers, sometimes friends are smoking and they try to fit in the group. I'm not really sure why they smoke, because I'm not one of them. I've once asked my mom why she smokes, she blamed on my dad lol

One of the main reasons that people smoke is to reduce stress, && i think when they do it, it takes their minds off reality and they feel like they're in their 'zone' and can relax and feel more secure about themselves.

hope this helps and answers your question!

It is relaxing. It becomes a habit and an addiction.
