I have half-life 2 for the computer, but i never played the first one. What happened?

Gordon Freeman is, as you know, the main protagonist of the game series. He'd only recently been approved as a physics theorist at the Black Mesa installation in New Mexico. Essentially, among the first of his days at work, Black Mesa was given the go-ahead to start experimentation on a teleportation device. Upon moving the sample into the scanner, an incident called the Resonance Cascade (which had until then only been considered a scientific improbability), occurs, and teleports alien organisms into the facility. While Gordon's friend Barney Calhoune, and fellow scientists Dr. Isaac Kliener and Eli Vance manage to escape, Gordon is drawn further into the facility in an effort to escape himself, only to find himself to be the target of not only the monstrosities that have been sent there, but a military special-forces unit which intends to cover up the whole of the incident.

At the end, having teleported to the world of Xen and defeated Nihilanth, freeing all Vortiguant aliens from enslavement, but a mysterious figure, known only as G-man (a middle-aged man in a business suit with unusual speaking habits) approaches Gordon and offers to spare his life in return for rendering his services further whenever they are needed. It is assumed that Gordon agrees. Meanwhile, as Barney Calhoune escapes in a jeep with a few survivors, a soldier named Adrian Shepard is sealed in a similar fate.

Now, what you don't hear.

Upon the Nihilanth's destruction, anomolies occured, dubbed the Portal Storms, in which a massve alien army called the Combine invaded earth. In what was known as the Seven-Hour War, the armed forces of the planet quickly fell, and the human race only was saved from complete eradication due to the "intervention" and "negotiations" of one Dr. Breen. Quickly setting up shop, the Combine produces a means to supress reproductive cycles for nearly 2 decades, before Gordon finally turns up in City 17.

During this time, however, Barney Calhoune is able to infiltrate the Combine and city patrol, Isaac Kleiner begins work within City 17 to produce a teleportation device to Black Mesa East, where Eli Vance and his daughter, Alyx, have set up the other end of the tunnel, in an effort to evacuate other humans from City 17. In addition, Eli Vance manages to make peaceful contact with the Vortigaunt race, who offer their abilities and aid, and incidentally, hold Dr. Vance in very high regard.
