It's not about race. There aren't many African-Americans playing in the NHL because not many African-Americans play hockey. Hockey is mostly a Canadian game, and the majority of the African-American population is in urban, American cities and in the South. Not too many African-Americans get involved with the sport of hockey due to the amount of travel, the cost of the sport, and the location of competitive leagues. For the most part, competitive hockey is played in the northern widwest and in western and eastern Canadian leagues. If you are good enough to play ice hockey at the NHL level it doesn't matter what ethnicity you possess.

There aren't many Americans that play in the NHL. Most players are either Canadian, Russian, or Swiss. And really, like a lot of people said, its cold on the ice! But there has been small number of players of African decent doing very well over the last few years. Georges Laraque is probably the best African decent but he is from Montreal, Quebec. Maybe when more African Americans think hockey is cool, there will be more.

Why aren't there many Chinese, East Indian, or Latinos playing hockey? Canadian cities have huge populations of Chinese and East Indian and American cities have huge Latino populations. The fact is that NHL Hockey players come from small towns where junior hockey is everything to the community. And minorities tend to live in cities, where junior hockey doesn't have the same importance.

Because originally hockey is a winter sport where black people are less present then in areas where summer sports are played but they are black players in the NHL like Iginla , Laraque , Emery , Carter , Brathwaite and they were before , Savage and the great Fuhr who by the way got his access deny from a golf course because of his skin colour back in the 80`s . I think the day is soon where you are going to see many black players in the NHL , and many more other nationnalities like asians or latin-americans.

There is actually a history of black hockey players that dates back as far as slavery. Escaped slaves went to as far as Maine and were transferred to places such as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The game of hockey grew popular in Canada. Black people developed the "Colored Hockey League" the CHL. The teams were black, and played white teams and had good wins against some of the best. They even got an audience as much as 3000 people. This story got wiped out, because the majority of canada is white and most of the attention was towards how white people played, so now the story is forgotten.

Because where Hockey originated from and the countries it really reached out to had almost no black people in there population, and is still that way for most part. The real funny thing is that in our now time where Hockey is a Popular sport and is played in everywhere across the US, there still isn't any Blacks playing the sport. Oh, and please don't call the Blacks in the NHL African-Americans, that's a disgrace to America cause they are all French-Canadian. They are good players though for most part.
I like all the thumbs down for being honest and stating the truth. Too many people with one sided eyes thinking I'm being Racist about blacks......If I am being racist to anybody, its to French- Canadians. Just be lucky I didn't state the real truth and hurt a lot more peoples feelings!

Because African-Canadians created hockey and then people forgot about them. Two guys recently wrote a book about
If we'd known that, African Americans might have been more interested to play hockey.
Also, Hockey's expensive with all of the equipment, so a lot of African Americans can't afford it

their not African-American their Americans Mike Grier, Donald Brashear, and some are Canadians like Jerome Iginla, Goerge Laraque and so on. there's just over 10 players in the NHL today. the only African player is from Johannesburg, South Africa and he plays goalie for the Washington Capitals and hes not black his name is Olaf Kolzig. if your born in the US or Canada your American or Canadian. if it was that case then were not American or Canadian cause are families come from all over the world.

That's easy. There aren't many of any type of American in the NHL. On the other hand, there are a greater proportion of Black Canadians in the NHL than there are Black Canadians.
