There is a bill going through the California legislature looking to legalize assisted suicide for terminally ill patients with less than 6 months to live. If you don't know much about the subject, please don't bother answering.

Afterflakes,
This has nothing to do with abortion or killing off all the elderly. You obviously know little about this topic. This is about a Dr. helping a terminally ill patient commit suicide. Nothing more, nothing less. Don't bring a completely new and unrelated argument into this.

I believe that if they are in severe pain, the choice should be soley up to the person in question. If I knew I was going to die a terrible death, I would definately want assistance to make it bearable.
Also, if somebody wants to die, so be it, this way is more civilized than finding the person who killed themself in a brutal way.

I do think it shoud be legal. To say a person has 6 months left to live is probably the wrong criteria. I work for Hospice and people have to requalify for Hospice every 6 months and the criteria is that they have to have six months or less to live. I know people who have fit that standard for years.
People thought the there would be a rush of people to move to Oregon when they gave terminally ill people the right to die. There wasn't.
I watch my grandma die a slow painful death and I don't wish that on anyone. If she had the opportunity to die a less painful way I would have wanted her to take it.
I don't understand people say it's inhumane to let your animal suffer, but people don't get that same respect.
I think if there are at least two doctors that agree that the patient is terminally ill and has 6 months or less to live and a mental fit then yes they should. I think that if they are not mentally competant then no, nobody else should be able to make that choice for them.

this has been going around I believe Oregon Death With Dignity Act (1994) is what it's called the Dr. prescribes you a lethal dose of something and you fill the script and follow the instructions the Dr. gave you. my oppinion is in quotes so if you are not interested skip past the quotes. """""I believe you can end your own life. but someone who assist you in doing so such as a Dr is wrong you want to do it then it should be totally on you. there are many over the counters that you can take that do the same thing. when including another person and risking their well being is somewhat selfish nomatter what they will walk away having a burden to cary from then on."""""" the bill in california is very similar to Oregons. see the sight below

I believe that you choose to enter this world. If you choose to exit early that should be a personal decision. No one should interfere. In some cultures if you dishonored yourself or your family you must take you life immediatly. Some believe you go to hell for suicide. Some believe it is noble. Some believe it is not. I believe you will be back to figure out what you were escaping from by killing yourself. On the other hand I don't think you should be forced to take medication or some family member try to legally get it into your body. If you are sick and dying it should be your choice to refuse medical treatment and end your own life. If someone wants to die bad enough they will stop breathing and no one can stop them in the long run. Are we not all committing suicide slowly anyway? Smoking, drinking, medication, emotional addiction, drugs, over eating and chemical toxins in our food or whatever else we do to ourselves is ultimatly suicidal behavior. Its a personal right. Whether others agree or not with it being wrong or right.

Yes...it should be legalised in all countries! It is easy for people who are not going through the battles of a disease that reduces them to the shell of a human they once were... I have a friend who's father is dieing of cancer and he has been help in medicine to prolong his life no matter how short it is and how painful it is...He just wants to die and get it over with! It hurts him to see what it does to his family , they have to put everything on hold...which they gladly do ! but he knows that they sacrifice alot to be there for him , He has a matter of weeks now to live...bless his soul!..I just hope that for situations like this and many others that there is a legalisation to assisted suicides for the terminally ill ! We are quick to put an animal down for humane reasons...why not for humans?

no it should not. abortion is the beginning and now it is spreading to the terminally ill who "want to die". it would be a domino effect...where will it end? will it somehow turn into, gas the terminally ill anyway, they dont have long. should we get rid of the elderly now because they are living longer and they put a drag on money for benefits? should the mentally impaired be done away with because they also put a drain on the economy and heck, they dont know any better (like an unborn baby)...get rid of them. it should not be happening because, where will it end? with you because you have blue eyes?
little, all of the things i stated have everything to do with assisted suicide. i do know a great deal about the topic, not to mention that i live in california. it is your small mind that will not see the big picture or cannot see another side of legalizing or even condoning assisted suicide.

Yes it should be legal. My sister just passed away from cancer. There was no hope of a cure and she was in extreme pain. She wanted to die but we had to watch her suffer. If her doctors could have helped her it would have been a good thing.

It should be legal only if it isn't to get people out of financial hardships and the person has stated beforehand that they wanted it.

Absolutely. It amazes me how we, as human beings, have the compassion to take animals out of their misery ... yet won't allow ourselves to give the same respect to our fellow humans. :(
