My favorite theory is that when the moon gets closer it repels the outer positive ionosphere of the earth's atmosphere. Driving positive ions down closer to the earth's surface. And it is these positive ions that make people hyper. I don't know if anybody has tested this theory but it sounds plausible.
In response to umjahwa. You are mistaken about the moon being the same distance from the earth all the time. When the earth and sun are pulling in the same direction the moon is closer to the earth. And that is also when the full moon appears. This is a well known fact. That is why volcanoes tend to erupt around full moons and why the tides are higher.

In response to some purported "answers":
The gravitational pull of the Moon has a negligible effect on humans and produces ABSOLUTELY NO TIDAL FORCES IN THE HUMAN BODY!!!!!!!!!! This is because tides on Earth occur due to a difference in the pull of the Moon’s gravity on the vast mass of the oceans.
I would explain in more detail if I had the time or the energy.
In short, tides CAN NOT happen in humans because (1) the amount of water is too small and (2) there is effectively zero difference in gravity between opposite sides of the body. The Moon is simply too far away to exert any sizable gravitational influence on a mass as insignificant as a human. In fact, if you were to hold a grapefruit above your head, it would exert much more gravity on you than the Moon. Also it is EXTREMLY incorrect to say the Moon “gets closer” or “farther away” to the Earth. The distance to the Moon does not fluctuate. Period. (well...this is not completely true. The Moon IS slowly inching into a higher orbit. It that involves advanced interactions with the tides that I will not get into.)
Please people! READ UP BEFORE MAKING AN ANSWER!!!!! I am so tired of scientifically inept “answers”! GRRR!!!!!!!!!
I am sorry for ranting so much. I know I did not really address the original question (although it is a good one to ask). My guess it is more psychological than anything else.

I really do think the moon has something to do with our emotions. The reason why I think this is because is because the moon affects the tides on the earth's water surfaces-- when the moon is near the earth, it pulls at the water and we have hightides and high peaks in the waves, whe the moon is far from earth, it produces low tides and low peaks in the waves-- humans are composed of something like 75% of water-- because of our composure, some people believe the moon has an effect on our moods due to its controll over our body water-- they also say the moon has a stronger effect on females.so yes, i do believe the moon has something to do with our emotions.

I think there has been so much written about the moon influencing our emotions that we have begun to accept it. Our emotions are generated from within .How could an object in the sky do that. It is a lot of nonsense if you think about it rationally. You may as well say the sun shining is doing the same thing.People are so vulnerable about things like this that they use anything as an excuse for feeling the way they do. Your emotions come and go at will.

there's the full moon thing, i think that's cause the extra light, it's actually pretty bright out on full moons. Also the moons gravity is strong enough to pull the tides, we can assume it to have some physical impact on us as well.

Statistics have shown that there is a correlation between increased crime and full moons but there is no scientific reason based off of physics for this. Many other theories (psychological or other) can be developed for this but as far as the moons light or gravity effecting emotions has no basis.

I have worked in retail for many years. I can always tell when we are in or near the full moon phase. People are crabbier and even sometimes almost crazy.
