A full packet of Red Kool Aid or Jello can be used in exchange of food coloring in most fake blood recipes. Add to dish soap, corn syrup, or honey, plus a tablespoon of flour to thicken.

Grenadine works well too.

Usually fake blood (like what you see in haunted houses) is nearly pure sugar. Melted jolly ranchers or something along those lines. It looks cool when the people in the haunted house have it on, but it is incredibly sticky and not practical if you are going to wear it for the entire night. However, if you want to make it without additional food coloring--be aware that all red products have so much red dye in them anyway that it will probably permanently stain.

Ketchup works best for the blood on your clothing. It dries very quickly and when dried is more the color of real blood, not the bright red you are probably wishing it to be. A great idea if this is for blood on the walls, or blood squirting. However, for blood on your face, ketchup runs too quickly and cannot hold up to a performance.

In the haunted house, we keep that fresh kill look by reapplying it every 20 min so that it is basically never dry. However, it isn't good for your skin at all since you are clogging the pores. But the sugary mixture keeps it from running and dripping.

Red food coloring, ketchup and water, or tomato paste and water.
