Heehee, i think a lot of the above readers missed the "male" section of the question. There is a basic cell that will one day become a human. It is the most basic form of "us". It is neither Male nor Female. Men have both X and Y which means we could have been female at one point. Because of this basic template of sorts, we were determined to have nipples before we were even discerened from male or female.

Its because all mammals start at the same template, this means, all mammals start out as a female until, the male hormons from Y chromosomes kick in to effect. :D This answer can be found on the book call "Why Do Men Have Nipples? Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini "
Enjoy :P

It is a question of biology. All male mammals have them. When mother nature makes an organism (embryo) it has both male and female characteristics, kind of like spare parts, depending on the hormones that are produced by the chromosomes (XX in females, XY in males) the organisms will produce estrogen or testosterone and the secondary sex characteristics will develop, like: breasts in females; beard in males. But the organism is ready to go which ever way the hormones dictate therefore you get secondary sex characteristics.

Not all mammals have nipples - Monotremes and Echidnas lactate through their integument. For classes of mammals that do have males with nipples, nipples probably represent a vestigial structure, an adaptation that serves no purpose anymore.
